Sunday, March 4, 2007: Beginner Fire:
4:00 - 7:00 PM (with a short break)
Lessons for Beginning Poi artists
Our session will begin with a discussion of poi practices and mindset created for success. For beginning poi artists, we will focus on fundamental movement principles as well as ensuring the artist has the basic moves in all directions. Then we'll work on how to transition between same and split direction movements as well as flowing between moves.
The beginner session includes access to the Temple of Poi Computer Based Training Program. All Students must complete the computer based training prior to March 3. This will maximize the student investment. The opening of the training will be a review of everything covered in the computer based training program.
Upon registering for the course, students will be given access to the training as well as being shipped a set of practice poi included in the tuition.
Beginner Fire Lessons
This session will focus on fire safety and permitting information so students garner an understanding of what the risks and appropriate precautions are when handling fire. The session will then find students creating their fire poi custom sized to their ideal length.
Weather permitting, we will then proceed outside and spin fire. The training session will begin with everyone using duvetyn to extinguish a flaming tool. After each artist will participate by both acting as a safety for other artists as well as spinning fire for the group. We encourage students to read our fire safety information prior to arriving and we invite artists to bring guests who may want to learn fire safety procedures and witness their first fire spin as part of the workshop.
The tuition for this session includes all the materials necessary to make a set of fire poi as well as a piece of duvetyn, a fire retardant fabric used to extinguish fire.
Lessons for Intermediate and Advanced Poi artists
For intermediate and advanced Poi artists: Not only we will focus on honing skills (wall plane, multibeat, behind the back, polyrhythmic, split direction, etc.) we will work with combinations of moves and the flow between them. After all, what good does it do you to have a move that you can't string together with other moves? We will introduce some of our poi theory that explains how to understand more fully how to connect moves together and then we'll introduce some slick transitions (stalls, wraps, etc.) and some combos of moves you can use (and reuse like moves themselves) in your performances to add flair and fun to your poi play and performance time.
Intermediate students will also gain access to the Temple of Poi Computer Based Training Program. We anticipate this information is merely a review for intermediate students and will provide an understanding of our terminology rather than skill education. Upon registering for the course, students will be given access to the training included in the tuition.
Performance and Celebration
Saturday evening will find GlitterGirl performing for the students. All participants in any of the sessions as well as their guests are welcome to attend the celebration to share ideas, enjoy the performance and taken in the splendor of Shenandoah National Park. Intermediate and advanced students are welcome to create a performance for the group as well. Performances will be held indoor and, if weather permitting a fire performance will happen outdoor as well.
